Part two, Some inspiration

Few images I took in the late 1990.s on the preserved portion of DONJ from Jädraås seen here to Tallås, the line extends a 1.5 kilometres further to east to allmost to Svartbäcken. See more info and rollig stock at my other site, Railscenes by Ollie.

After two weeks with the No.28 I have been planning on the might be future roster and most important, a trackplan to suit an available space in a room sized 5 meters by 4 meters and one wall section of 3 meters. As you look at an empty space the space seems huge, but i have seen a plenty of layouts where somewhere there have become too much compromises and all in sudden it all looks like a mixture of unfinnished layout and bowl of spaghetti, where the train reach the yard of the new town or yard while the caboose only 9 cars behind is middle of the yard of the pervious town located 20 miles away....

A look from the middle of the yard of Jädraås at the main to west.

No I will try to make something in terms of "Less is More" more. From the beginning I was trying to squeeze in a portion of DONJ between Jädraås with all shops and servicing facilites intactby Tallås to Svartbäcken. This would have given me some extra sidings between Jädraås and Tallås with a couple small saws served by the line. By just measuring, the exteded yard of Tallås, this won't even fit even folded along the three walls. So the seach goes on, i took a hard look on Furlows San Juan Central with a modification to include the main yard in the run around loop, but even condenced it would not look right, for a such remote area it would be far to populated with tracks. Note I was intending to replace the buildings with american prototype but the photos here does have the charm i am looking for.

So right now I am down sizing my plans, there was a very nice switching layout in one Gazette in the eighties that could be adopted to my space and theme. I would like to beef it up with another passing track so the town would have a slight feeling of being important town along the line. First Ineed to get some evalution pieces of Peco tracks. My plan is to purchase three turn outs and few pieces of flex. Luckily I ordered and received the largest engine on my fleet first so I can check out both clearences and performance.

Few words of the planned fleet or roster. I will stick to the theme of DONJ but translate to somewhere in America, where specific, yet undecided. But the main role for the line is a portion of a long line used primaly for hauling timber and some other freight to supply the towns, as the high ways still have long way to go to threat the tiny company, the railroad still offers a daily passager run with a trainset of three cars and a reefer to please the few milk producing farmers.

    Engines

  • 2-3 Consolidations (Main line duty)
  • 1-2 Moguls (Main line duty)
  • 1 Climax (Switcher and locals)
  • 1 0-4-2T Porter (MoW service and back up for the Climax)

On freight cars, most will be flat cars for timber service, note that i don't call it logging service as the timber I plan to haul is not tht big, it will be like pulpwood as by the unmodelled coast is the location of a timber hungry paper mill. Few box cars, cattle cars, high side condolas for coke, low side condolas for just anything and couple of cabooses rounds up the roster.
